Professor Emmanuelle Charpentier, director of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of pathogens in Berlin, was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing one of the most advanced tools in genetic engeeniring: the CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing system. Following research conducted in the early 2010, togheter with other scientists, she demonstrated in 2012 that it is possible to precisely and efficiently modify DNA of animals, plants, and microorganisms in a targeted manner.

Within a few years, the technology has already revolutionized life sciences, contributing to the development of innovative therapies against cancer and hereditary diseases and, in agricultural sector, offering new opportunities for the selection of plants with new characteristics suitable for implementing more sustainable and climate-resilient production systems.
