In the United States, agricultural and food-related industries contribute to 5.5% of the total gross domestic product and support over 22 million jobs while producing billions of tonnes of organic waste impacting our environment. To make agriculture more sustainable and to enhance the revenue stream of our farmers, the whole concept of agricultural waste management has to be reimagined with special emphasis on valorization. Therefore, our research program in NC State University focuses on the valorization of agricultural wastes into various products via thermochemical and catalytic processes. The talk specifically will cover various aspects of our research program including, the development of electrodes for supercapacitors, adsorptive treatment of animal wastewater, biomass pretreatment, and catalytic cracking of methane. Faculty, researchers, and graduate students interested in waste valorization are especially encouraged to attend. The talk will be followed by a discussion section and exchange of ideas.
