Exploring future pathways for a sustainable food system transformation

An event for Futures, Design and Systems Thinking – co-organized by JRC and the University of Bologna | Representative: Matteo Vittuari

  • Date: 02 October 2024 from 09:30 to 17:00

  • Event location: DISTAL, Viale Fanin 50, Bologna (Italy)

  • Access Details: Free admission subject to presenting invitation

The event is co-organized by the Joint Research Center of the European Commission and the University og Bologna, Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences. The workshop aims at engaging experts and actors of the food system with tools and methods from design, futures and systems thinking to explore possible pathways for sustainable food system transformations. The activities of the workshops ground in a set of future visions that include the internalisation of the major costs currently exerted by food systems on the society and the environment (e.g., biodiversity loss, prevalence of obesity and other non-communicable diseases, social inequalities) grounding on the objectives and output of the HEU FOODCoST project. Based on quantitative and qualitative evidence collected in previous research activities, these visions guide the identification of transformation pathways by setting transition objectives that will help to disentangle complexity by focusing on the internalisation of specific impacts on selected food system outputs (e.g., delivering healthy diets for all, ensuring fair food value chains, achieving resource-efficient agricultural production, mitigating climate change effects).
