Special issue information:

To address the important challenge raised by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, novel solutions for increasing the sustainability of the food supply chain, based on green processing technologies and bio-technologies, waste and by-products reduction and valorization, smart and eco-friendly packaging, sustainable storage and distribution strategies are urgent. This special issue will consider both original research papers and reviews dealing with the increased sustainability of the food and beverage supply chain. Whilst relevant papers focusing on single process/aspect of the food supply chain will be considered, preference will be given to those multidisciplinary contributions able to address different issues concurrently and to assess and optimize multi-dimension impacts of the global food industry.

Topics that will be considered are the following:
• Emerging non-thermal processing systems
• Novel mild processing technologies
• Design of smart and eco-friendly food packaging solutions
• Tailored technologies and bio-technologies for by-products valorization
• Traceability systems and smart sensors for food safety management
• Improved food safety management and compliance
• Digital twins in food processing, storage and distribution
• Design of sustainable food storage/distribution operations
